• A better way to produce premium quality
    Australian seafood

  • Our primary goal has always been
    environmental sustainability

  • Intensive, indoor, inland aquaculture – vital to
    future seafood production

  • Seaweed aquaculture – a natural pathway to
    reducing green house gas emissions

About A-Culture

A-Culture is an Australian owned company that has developed a modern and environmentally sustainable system for producing premium seafood products in a clean green environment.  The A-Culture team is an impressive group of successful business and aquaculture leaders, with the knowledge and skills needed to produce premium seafood products for local and international markets. A-Culture has commenced its first project, with the purchase of a 50-hectare greenfield site near the Riverland town of Waikerie in South Australia, where it will construct and manage a state of the art indoor aquaculture facility.

The Waikerie Project

The Waikerie Project is an environmentally sustainable aquaculture project which has the capacity to change the face of aquaculture in Australia. The project makes use of saline water from the vast local underground aquifer which is currently considered an environmental problem. A-Culture’s unique, purpose built, water treatment system will mean this unwanted saline water can be utilised to provide the perfect environment for fish production.

The pristine bio secure environment will ensure that A-Culture will be able to deliver high quality seafood all year round that is not susceptible to temperature and weather fluctuations. The environmental and economic benefits of the Waikerie Project are significant, and planning is underway to ensure that A-Culture’s vision for the region is realised.

The Ozras System

A-Culture’s custom designed production system (OZRAS) combines the latest technologies with the most efficient water filtering and recirculation systems. The OZRAS system minimises the need for a continuous fresh supply of saline water, whilst conserving energy consumption and controlling energy costs.

The small amount of water which is discharged is filtered in sediment settlement ponds and then evaporated on site on evaporation pans. The unique design features incorporated in the water filtration system enhances efficiency and differs significantly from conventional recirculating aquaculture systems.

Sustainability and Environment

Salt build-up in the water and land along the River Murray adversely affects agricultural production, drinking water, irrigation, and aquatic biodiversity. By using this saline water, the Waikerie Project puts this unwanted resource to good use.

The waste created by the farmed fish will also be used on site to grow Asparagopsis seaweed, which when fed to cattle, can reduce greenhouse the gas emissions from cow burps by as much as 90 per cent. The novel tank design and unique filtration of The OZRAS system, reduces power usage significantly. The project is designed to be powered by renewable energy sources including battery, solar and wind power which have been factored into the design of the Project.

CH4 GLOBAL | AN URGENT MISSION

CH4 Global is on an urgent mission to create an aquaculture ecosystem, for Asparagopsis seaweed, to slash methane emissions from ruminant livestock and positively impact climate change. A-Culture is partnering with CH4 Global to grow and supply Asparagopsis seaweed utilising the waste water from their Waikerie Project.

CH4’s sustainable seaweed solution for slashing emissions is a program worth supporting. Immediately processed after harvesting, this marine bio-product can be used as a supplement for cows and other farm animals (including goats, sheep and deer). It is easy to add to existing feed. And, research data indicates that in addition to reducing methane emissions Asparagopsis also improves feed conversion.

In field trials in Australia and the USA, carried out by CSIRO, UC Davis and University of Pennsylvania, this product has been shown to reduce methane emissions by up to 99% (depending on dose) — in beef and dairy cattle as well as sheep – with no adverse effects to livestock, their products, or the environment.
